The Priest of High Strangeness article is perhaps the most important and controversial piece of writing about alien abduction research in history. It was written by Carol Rainey, Budd Hopkins’ former partner and PBS documentarian. Hopkins defined the field of alien abduction research through his book Missing Time and by training John E. Mack and David Jacobs in the use of hypnosis. These three men defined alien abduction for the mainstream, creating the narrative foundation for UAP Disclosure.

The article devastated the reputation of Budd Hopkins and David Jacobs, calling into question the entire field of alien abduction hypnosis. Rainey documented clear violations of research integrity, such as when Jacobs diagnosed a hypnotee with a mental illness in trance then recommended drugs or when Hopkins arranges a profit share with a subject prior to investigation and hypnosis.
